Somatic Respiratory Integration: Step by Step for Stage 2: Polarity

As we progress through the stages of Somatic Respiratory Integration (SRI), we move from acknowledging our suffering in Stage 1 to exploring a deeper duality in Stage 2, known as Polarity. This stage is all about recognizing and experiencing the opposing forces or contrasts within ourselves—whether it’s tension versus ease, fear versus courage, or contraction versus expansion. Stage 2 helps us become aware of these polarities, not to fix or resolve them but to feel and embrace their coexistence.

In this blog, we’ll explore a step-by-step guide to practicing Stage 2 of SRI and how it can help you connect with your body’s rhythms on a deeper level.

Purpose of Stage 2: Polarity

The purpose of Stage 2 is to deepen your awareness of the contrasting sensations, emotions, or thoughts within you. This stage helps you develop a greater capacity to hold space for these opposites, fostering balance and resilience. By embracing polarity, you allow yourself to move out of a stuck state and into a dynamic process of integration.

Step-by-Step Guide to Stage 2: Polarity

  1. Prepare Your Space: Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can focus without distractions. Sit or lie down in a way that supports relaxation but keeps you alert.
  2. Body Connection: Place one hand on your chest and the other on your lower abdomen. This placement connects you to two key areas of your body where polarity is often felt—your heart and your center of gravity.
  3. Conscious Breathing: Begin by breathing deeply into the areas beneath your hands. Feel the rise and fall of your chest and abdomen. Allow the breath to flow naturally, without forcing it.
  4. Focus on Contrasting Sensations: As you breathe, tune into the sensations in your body. Notice areas of tension and areas of ease. Perhaps one part of your body feels tight while another feels open. Simply observe these contrasts without judgment.
  5. Acknowledge Opposing Emotions: Along with physical sensations, notice any emotional polarities that arise. You may feel calm yet restless, or hopeful yet doubtful. Allow yourself to fully experience both emotions simultaneously.

  1. Use a Wave-Like Breath Pattern: Begin to create a rhythmic, wave-like breath. Imagine your breath moving like a wave through your body, rising and falling, connecting the polarities. Feel the flow of energy between the opposites.
  2. Stay Present: Spend several minutes in this practice, staying with the rhythm of your breath and the awareness of polarity. Let yourself feel grounded in the coexistence of opposites.
  3. Integration: When you feel ready, take a few grounding breaths and gently release your hand placements. Reflect on what you’ve experienced and how the practice has helped you connect with your inner polarities.

What You May Experience

During Stage 2, you might feel a heightened sense of contrast within your body or emotions, but this is part of the process. You’re learning to hold space for these polarities without needing to fix or change them. This awareness helps you create a more balanced and integrated internal state, fostering resilience and adaptability in your daily life.

Stage 2 of Somatic Respiratory Integration invites you to explore the dynamic balance between opposing forces within yourself. By practicing this stage regularly, you enhance your ability to navigate life’s challenges with greater awareness and inner harmony.
